On October 6, 2026, the Municipal Group of VOX in Chiclana reported a rise in unemployment following the end of the high tourist season. This trend has been described as a harsh reality check for the town, indicating that the local government's reliance on tourism as the sole economic driver is misguided.
In September, Chiclana saw an increase of 302 unemployed individuals, bringing the total number of jobless residents to 6,648. This represents a relative change of 4.76%, nearly double the provincial average of 2.39%. Among the unemployed, nearly 70% (4,427 individuals) come from the services sector, with over 60% (4,039 individuals) being women.
“The figures provide a clear and objective snapshot of the reality faced by households in Chiclana. Once hotels reduce their operations, families lose one or more incomes until the next tourist season begins,” said Manuel Vela, spokesperson for the Municipal Group of VOX.
Vela further criticized the socialist-led government for failing to diversify the economy beyond tourism, stating, “These data once again reveal the failure of a government that has not succeeded in making Chiclana an attractive place for entrepreneurship and has not contributed to the generation of dignified and stable employment. We urge Román to reflect on these figures and take action to transform the labor landscape in Chiclana. While we can take pride in our tourism, Chiclana is much more than just beaches and hotels.”
