Mayor Abel Caballero announced that the city council will not pass on the 3.5% increase in the Sogama waste management fee to residents. In 2027, the council will allocate €10.89 million to the fee, an increase of €368,240 from 2026, while keeping all municipal taxes and fees frozen.

Vigo city council to absorb Sogama's 3.5% fee increase

Mayor Abel Caballero has confirmed that the Concello de Vigo will not pass on the upcoming 3.5% increase in the Sogama waste management fee to local residents. This announcement came during a press conference on 3 November 2026, where Caballero expressed his discontent with the new fee adjustment.

For the year 2027, the city council is expected to allocate €10.89 million to the Sogama fee, which is an increase of €368,240 compared to the previous year. Despite this rise, Caballero assured that the increase would not affect citizens' bills, as all municipal taxes and fees will remain frozen in 2027.

Caballero described the fee increase as an “outrage,” highlighting that Sogama, a public waste management company, plans to raise its rates due to reported inefficiencies. The general fee for waste treatment is set to rise from €111.13 per tonne in 2026 to €115.02 in 2027, while the reduced fee will increase from €97.76 to €101.18 per tonne.

“We have seen that Sogama, due to its immense inefficiencies, is raising the waste fee by 3.5% for 2027,” Caballero stated, condemning the ongoing increases. He reiterated that the council did not pass on the previous year's increase to residents and will not do so for 2027 either.

In contrast to Sogama's fee hikes, Caballero noted that the waste tax in Vigo remains unchanged, unlike the increasing rates imposed by the regional government, the Xunta. The city council's estimates indicate that payments to Sogama have significantly risen in recent years, with an increase from €6.1 million in 2023 to a projected €10.89 million in 2027, representing an overall rise of approximately 78.5%.

In 2025, the council projected the fee at €10.08 million, followed by €10.52 million in 2026. The mayor previously warned of the substantial increases in fees during a public statement in September 2025, criticising the Xunta for its “abusive and intolerable” fee hikes imposed on the city.
