Hugo Chicote Sagredo, competing in the under-17 category, and Lucas Ortega Clemente, representing the under-9 category, were the two players from the Bargas-Soliss Chess Club who participated in the World Chess Championships from 14 to 20 October in Roquetas de Mar, a town in Almería, Spain. Both players demonstrated their sporting merit and delivered commendable performances throughout the tournament.
Lucas Ortega, the youngest from Villarrobledo, joined the club to strengthen the under-12 team and finished in an impressive 14th place overall. Notably, he was the highest-ranked Spanish player in the competition, securing 7 points out of a possible 11 and playing crucial matches in the final rounds. For instance, on the penultimate day, he was competing for a top position at the second table alongside the eventual world runner-up. Lucas has a promising career ahead, and it is hoped that he continues to share his journey with the club.
Hugo Chicote has been a prominent figure in chess over the past two years, having recently won the Regional Individual Absolute Championship and playing a vital role in both the youth and absolute teams. He finished 25th out of 73 participants at the world level, with several competitors on the brink of becoming notable figures in international chess. His achievements serve as an inspiration for his students at the Municipal School.
The club extends its gratitude to the families whose support enabled these young players to participate in such a prestigious global event without leaving the country, reminiscent of the 2018 championships in Santiago, where other club members also competed. Congratulations and thanks to both players for proudly representing the club.
