Sant Cugat hosts second edition of sound heritage days

Sant Cugat is preparing to welcome the second edition of the Sound Heritage Days, a series of talks dedicated to exploring the intersections of music, memory, and intangible heritage. Organised by the Sant Cugat Traditional Music School (Escuela de Música Tradicional de Sant Cugat) with the backing of the local council, the events will take place from October to December and are free and open to the public.

The inaugural talk is scheduled for 28 October, featuring architect and Gaudí Year curator Galdric Santana, who will discuss his project involving the creation of the bells for the Sagrada Familia basilica. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of sound and musical heritage while providing specialised knowledge to the community.

The Sound Heritage Days will include a series of three conferences aimed at a broad and diverse audience, particularly those interested in music, history, traditional culture, and heritage. The first session, titled "The Sagrada Familia as a colossal work of organ building," will take place at 19:00 in the Unión Centro Cultural.

On 11 November, the second talk will be held at the Sant Cugat Museum, led by Maria Incoronata Colantuono, a doctor in Art and Musicology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Her presentation, "The sculpted temple, the sung time: liturgy and memory in the Sant Cugat cloister," will explore the musical interpretation of Marius Schneider regarding the capitals of the monastery's cloister.

The series will conclude on 2 December at 19:00 with a talk by ethnomusicologist Jaume Ayats, titled "Let’s talk about carols, fot, fot, fot." This session will delve into the popular Catalan carols and the work of the Catalan Popular Songbook, examining their significance, origins, and social functions.

All activities are free and accessible to the public, encouraging community engagement with the region's rich musical and cultural heritage.
