The Mercat de la Plaça de Cuba is set to celebrate its 90th anniversary with a series of events, including a festive day on 10 October and guided tours aimed at showcasing its rich history and evolution.
Historical significance of the market
Opened in 1936, the market was designed by local architect Lluís Gallifa Grezner and has become a key commercial hub in Mataró, a city located in the Catalonia region of Spain. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century when it began as an open-air market during a period of demographic growth linked to industrialisation and the expansion of the textile sector.
Over the past 90 years, the market has adapted to the changing needs of the city and consumer habits. A comprehensive renovation in 2009 modernised its facilities while preserving the traditional market model focused on quality products and personal service. Today, the market features 36 stalls offering fresh, local produce, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and prepared meals, alongside a Bon Preu supermarket.
Festive day on 10 October
The main event will take place on Saturday, 10 October, as part of the Comerciada initiative, which promotes local commerce. Organised by the Association of Vendors of the Mercat de la Plaça de Cuba in collaboration with the Mataró City Council, the day will include a special offer for shoppers. Customers who make a purchase at the market will receive a ticket redeemable for a tapa and a drink between 11 am and 1 pm. Additionally, there will be a face-painting workshop starting at 10:30 am.
The celebration will culminate in a festive gathering featuring vendors, representatives from the vendor association, and local authorities, who will jointly blow out the candles on a commemorative cake.
Guided tours to explore the market
As part of the anniversary programme, the City Council will organise three guided tours on 29 October, 26 November, and 17 December. Interested participants can register via the Instagram accounts @comercmataro and @visitmataro, or through the website www.visitmataro.cat. These tours will provide insights into the market's history, operations, and architectural evolution, as well as access to areas typically closed to the public.
The tours will conclude with a tasting menu inspired by the gastronomy of 90 years ago, featuring products and recipes representative of that era. Pre-registration is required, and spots are limited.
A legacy of local commerce
Throughout its nine decades, the Mercat de la Plaça de Cuba has served as a vital space for local commerce and community interaction. The anniversary celebrations aim to honour its legacy and recognise the contributions of the vendors and customers who have been part of its story across generations.
