The Ongizatearen Plaza initiative, promoted by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, took place on 29 and 30 October at Alameda Gamon in Errenteria. The General Deputy, Eider Mendoza, expressed gratitude for the community's participation, stating, “We have placed at the centre of the square the keys to feeling good, in addition to being well.”
Over the two days, the initiative provided a platform for discussions on various topics influencing well-being, including physical exercise, healthy ageing, youth well-being, emotional health, and the importance of the Basque language (Euskera) in community life.
Mendoza highlighted that Errenteria was the twelfth stop for this initiative, which will continue across Gipuzkoa in the coming months, aiming to collaboratively build the keys to not only being well but also feeling well. She emphasised the importance of collective engagement in addressing emerging realities.
The programme included a workshop on healthy eating led by Anne Otegi from Elikaenea, featuring local seasonal products. Participants prepared healthy breakfasts while learning about conscious and sustainable eating.
Following this, a reflective space focused on social media and other factors affecting youth well-being and emotional health. In the afternoon, Badalab facilitated a discussion on the relationship between Euskera and well-being, exploring its role in daily life, integration, human relationships, new technologies, community sentiment, and belonging.
The event concluded with an analysis by anthropologist Josu Ozaita on the rituals and symbols of the Basque tradition of Gau Beltza. Additionally, Idoia Lizeaga led a workshop where participants decorated a flower as a symbol of protection and abundance, guided by local floral designer Begoña Fernandez. The Ongizatearen Plaza programme wrapped up with music, creating an informal atmosphere for sharing experiences from the two-day event.
