Natalia Ginzburg's humour shines in 'Me casé por alegría' at Teatro Español

Fran Weber directs this comedy by Italian writer Natalia Ginzburg, which humorously explores couple relationships, miscommunication, and the challenges of cohabitation. The story follows two newlyweds, played by Lucía Quintana and José Luis Patiño, who must learn to live together despite their differences.

Completing the cast are Puchi Lagarde, Paula Muz, and Sáhara Peña in this production by Teatro Español. The play features a translation by Andrés Barba, set design by Isi Ponce, costumes by Almudena Rodríguez Huertas, lighting by Rodrigo Ortega, and sound design by Juan Diego Vela.

'Me casé por alegría' offers a tender and humorous look at love, cohabitation, and the contradictions that arise when two strangers decide to share their lives. Originally premiered at the Teatro Stabile di Torino in 1965, the play captures the essence of 1960s Italy, a time of change following the war and fascism, often referred to as la dolce vita.

The narrative centres on Giuliana, an impulsive and cheerful young woman who marries the serious and wealthy Pietro almost on a whim. What begins as a spontaneous decision soon leads to a clash of two very different worlds. Despite their limited acquaintance, they strive to build a semblance of happiness while navigating misunderstandings, confusions, and absurd situations.

Ginzburg's characteristic sense of humour transforms everyday domestic conflicts into a comedic exploration of human relationships. Through ironic dialogue and relatable situations, the play highlights the gap between our expectations of love and our ability to express those feelings, tenderly showcasing the imperfections and contradictions of its characters.

Lucía Quintana stars as Giuliana, with José Luis Patiño as Pietro, supported by Puchi Lagarde as the Mother, Paula Muz as Vittoria, and Sáhara Peña as Ginestra. The artistic team includes Isi Ponce for set design, Almudena Rodríguez Huertas for costumes, Rodrigo Ortega for lighting, Juan Diego Vela for musical composition and sound, and Moisés Echevarría for characterisation.

'Me casé por alegría' will be performed at the Sala Margarita Xirgu from 6 November to 20 December at 19:30. An accessible performance with audio description and subtitles for the deaf will take place on 4 December, with recommended seating from row five onwards to ensure visibility of the subtitles.
