The Horno Hall of the Ciudadela in Pamplona is currently showcasing the installation 'Web' by British-Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum, which will be on display until 15 November. This artistic installation, part of the Contemporary Art Collection of the La Caixa Foundation, is included in the programming for the Pamplona 2026/Iruñeko Topaketak events held in the city from 2 to 12 October.
'Web' aims to transform the circular exhibition space into an immersive experience. The work resembles a spider's web, crafted from stainless steel cables and transparent glass spheres, evoking images of dew drops or a constellation. Through this installation, Hatoum alters the perception of the space and fosters a physical relationship with the environment.
The suspended web is notable for its perfect and meticulously woven structure, which can resemble a capturing net, creating a dual effect where beauty contrasts with the potential of being ensnared in an invisible web. This installation encapsulates some of the ongoing tensions in Hatoum's work, such as attraction and threat, delicacy and violence, or refuge and confinement.
Currently residing in London, Mona Hatoum has explored various artistic modalities throughout her career, including performance, video, photography, sculpture, installation, and works on paper. Her work primarily addresses social, political, and human themes such as displacement, marginalisation, exclusion, and systems of control.
Hatoum has participated in numerous international group exhibitions, including the Venice and Istanbul Biennales, Documenta (Kassel), Sydney, Sharjah, and Taipei. In the past decade, she has had significant solo exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which later travelled to the Tate Modern in London and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki. In September 2022, she presented three simultaneous solo exhibitions in Berlin, followed by a larger exhibition last year at the KAdE gallery in the Netherlands. Among her recent works is a site-specific installation created this year for the Cisterna building of the Prada Foundation in Milan.
