The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has announced the launch of two new heritage routes as part of its 'Paisajes con Historia' (Landscapes with History) programme. These routes, designed to highlight the island's significant historical and archaeological sites, will take place on 31 October and 7 November.
Details of the routes
The first route will occur on Saturday, 31 October, from 09:00 to 13:00, starting in the historic centre of Betancuria. Participants will explore notable landmarks such as the Church of Santa María, the Convent of San Buenaventura, and the Hermitage of San Diego. The route will also include a stop at the Archaeological Museum to learn about the island's indigenous population before proceeding to the archaeological site of Morro del Humilladero, known for its rock engravings, including podomorphs.
The second route is scheduled for Saturday, 7 November, also from 09:00 to 13:00, and will focus on the barranco de Tinojay, an area of archaeological interest famous for its unique boat-shaped rock engravings. This route will provide insights into the historical and cultural significance of these engravings and the importance of their conservation.
Significance of the initiative
Rayco León, the island's Councillor for Cultural Heritage, emphasised the value of such initiatives in fostering awareness and preservation of Fuerteventura's rich heritage. He stated, “These routes allow us to discover our history on-site, better understand the spaces that are part of our identity, and recognise the importance of protecting them for future generations.”
Registration and transportation
Registrations for both routes can be made through the website www.patrimoniofuerteventura.com. To facilitate access, the Cabildo will provide a bus service from various locations including Morro Jable, Gran Tarajal, Tuineje, Antigua, Corralejo, La Oliva, and Puerto del Rosario.
With these new offerings, the 'Paisajes con Historia' programme continues to promote knowledge of Fuerteventura's heritage through guided tours that connect the island's history, culture, and landscapes.
