IES Clara Campoamor has joined the activities of the 43rd National Zarzuela Week with a musical performance involving 13 first-year secondary school students. The students presented a musical and educational proposal centred around the zarzuela 'Gigantes y Cabezudos'.
The event featured contributions from music teacher José Luis Martín and English teacher Pepi Palacios, who assisted with the choreography. The performance was structured in three parts: the first included a prelude to 'Gigantes y Cabezudos', accompanied by a choreography that highlighted the students' efforts. Following this, student Lucía Mendoza played 'Rumores de la Caleta' by Isaac Albéniz on the piano, and the performance concluded with the Aragonese jota from the zarzuela.
The initiative also incorporated an educational segment, where one student posed questions to engage their peers with Spanish music and the featured work. Chelo Simón, the school's director, explained that the project has been in preparation since the beginning of the academic year through an open call for interested students. Despite limited rehearsal time, which takes place during breaks, she praised the students' commitment and the positive atmosphere created throughout the process. This activity not only fosters teamwork but also allows students from different classes to spend time together and build connections.
Luis Romero de Ávila, president of ACAZ, expressed his support for the involvement of secondary schools in such initiatives. He emphasised the importance of sustaining these activities during secondary education, a stage where student engagement often wanes. He noted that school events like this are vital for nurturing future talent and ensuring the continuation of lyrical traditions in the community.
