Gijón launches project to support elderly residents in rural areas

The Municipal Foundation of Social Services (FMSS) is set to present a new proposal today to the Federation of Rural Neighbourhood Associations of Gijón, known as 'Les Caseríes', aimed at supporting elderly residents in the rural areas of Gijón. The meeting will take place at the former schools of Ruedes.

This initiative is part of the municipal project 'Unwanted loneliness in the elderly' and seeks to establish a volunteer network to offer companionship and assistance with everyday tasks. Activities planned include accompanying seniors to medical appointments, picking up medications, doing small grocery shopping, helping with paperwork, assisting with mobile phone usage, or simply taking a walk and having a conversation.

The primary goal is to reduce social isolation, encourage outings, and help elderly individuals maintain an active lifestyle, enabling them to stay in their homes and familiar surroundings with improved quality of life.

To implement this initiative, the FMSS is collaborating with the Platform of Volunteering of Asturias and the Centre for Volunteering and Social Participation of the Area, which will provide support in programme design, volunteer training, and ongoing monitoring.

Through this proposal, the FMSS aims to strengthen collaboration with community movements and volunteer efforts, fostering support networks that enhance the lives of elderly residents in rural Gijón.
