The Ayuntamiento de Madrid, through the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT Madrid), is once again participating in the 'Libros a la Calle' campaign, an initiative led by the Madrid Publishers Association (AEM) aimed at promoting reading among public transport users.
This cultural campaign will be featured on 611 municipal buses, bringing literary diversity to commuters by displaying excerpts from works by 13 authors, many of whom have received prestigious awards. The selection encompasses a wide range of genres and is accompanied by illustrations from renowned artists to spark interest in reading during journeys.
Among the highlights circulating on the buses will be a poster dedicated to 'Ágata ojo de gato' by José Manuel Caballero Bonald, celebrating the centenary of his birth, and another featuring 'Conversación en La Catedral' by Mario Vargas Llosa, illustrated by Lady Desidia. Additionally, passengers will have access to further information about the works and their authors via a QR code included on the posters.
In total, 7,215 posters will be installed across various public transport modes in Madrid, showcasing texts from authors such as Gonzalo Celorio, winner of the 2025 Cervantes Prize; María Victoria Atencia, recipient of the 2025 National Prize for Spanish Letters; Miriam Reyes, awarded the 2025 National Poetry Prize; Eduardo Mendoza, who received the 2025 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature; Paco Cerdá, winner of the 2025 National Narrative Prize; and Candela Sierra, recipient of the 2025 National Comic Prize. The illustrations are created by artists including Sara Herranz, María Medem, Leticia Ruifernández, Javier Olivares, and Ana Oncina.
The 'Libros a la Calle' campaign was established in 1997 by the Madrid Publishers Association and is supported by the Regional Transport Consortium, EMT Madrid, and Metro de Madrid, as well as the Community of Madrid through its relevant cultural and transport departments, with backing from the Spanish Centre for Reprographic Rights (CEDRO).
