Documentary ‘Enigma’ explores survival of stateless nations in the Iberian Peninsula

Euskal Herria, Galiza, and the Països Catalans have joined forces to explore their survival without a state in the upcoming documentary titled Enigma. The project aims to raise €160,000 through crowdfunding to delve into how these regions have maintained their distinct identities in a continent where larger states have often suppressed internal diversity.

The documentary seeks to answer the question: how have Galiza, Euskal Herria, and the Països Catalans continued to exist as differentiated nations despite never having a state to protect them? This resilience is attributed to the organised efforts of communities, trade unions, cultural institutions, media outlets, and social movements.

For over half a century, these three nations have navigated challenges including dictatorship, globalisation, and the rise of far-right politics. The project will be financed from the ground up through a collective crowdfunding initiative involving Basque, Catalan, and Galician entities, with the campaign currently active on Verkami.

The trade union LAB is part of the driving force behind the project and is calling on its community to contribute to the fundraising efforts. Enigma will combine insights from historical and academic experts with voices from civil society that have played a crucial role in this resistance.

The documentary is intended for a wide audience, aiming to be showcased at festivals, commercial cinemas, streaming platforms, and television, while also serving as educational material in universities and as a reference resource for media outlets.
