Delegation from Millau visits Sagunto town hall to celebrate twinning anniversary

A delegation from Millau, France, has visited the town hall of Sagunto to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the twinning between the two municipalities. The visit was led by Millau's mayor, Jacques Godfrain, and took place in the plenary chamber of the town hall.

The event began with Mayor Godfrain signing the Book of Honour of Sagunto, followed by the exchange of gifts between the visiting delegation and local authorities. The reception concluded with a musical performance by one of Millau's prominent bands.

Patricia Sánchez, the councillor for twinning, emphasised the significance of this anniversary, stating, “Twenty years of history, encounters, culture, and above all, friendship between two cities that, despite being separated by a border, have found many reasons to feel close.” She added that twinning is built not just on signatures but on the involvement of people, associations, and families who open their doors and dedicate their time to fostering connections.

Although Sagunto's mayor, Darío Moreno, was unable to attend the reception, he welcomed the Millau delegation through a video message projected during the event. Mayor Godfrain highlighted the shared historical influences between the two cities, such as during the Roman domination and the Crown of Aragon. He remarked, “Beyond our common historical memory, both cities currently share fundamental values of twinning that we must cherish.”

Dominique Torres, president of the Twinning Committee, urged the continuation of friendship, solidarity, and curiosity between the two cities, stating, “Let us pass this fraternal spirit to new generations, as we truly need it in an increasingly uncertain world where individual interests prevail over collective ones.”

The event was attended by various local authorities, including María José Carrera, the acting mayor, and Gloria Calero, the mayor of Sagunto at the time the twinning was established, along with other municipal councillors and representatives from Millau.
