The Consell de Mallorca has reactivated the 'Estades esportives per a gent gran 2026' this autumn, aiming to attract nearly 1,000 participants from various hotels. This initiative is designed for individuals aged 65 and above, including pensioners, who will have the opportunity to engage in a two-day sports package led by specialised instructors. The programme promotes active, healthy, and social ageing.
Participants can choose from a variety of physical activities, including aquagym, line dancing, strength training, stretching, mindfulness, pilates, hiking, spinning, and health workshops. The programme also allows attendees to enjoy the facilities and natural surroundings of three hotel establishments located in Cales de Mallorca (Manacor), Cala Millor (Sant Llorenç des Cardassar), Cala Barca (Santanyí), Colònia de Sant Jordi (Ses Salines), the beaches of Muro, and Puerto de Alcúdia.
Today, Llorenç Galmés, the president of the Consell de Mallorca; Pedro Bestard, the second vice president and councillor for Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports; and Toni Prats, the island director of Sports, visited a group of participants at the Playa Garden & Spa hotel in Muro's beaches. President Galmés emphasised the importance of sports in later life, stating, 'It is proven that regular strength exercise allows for a better quality of life in old age. Physical maintenance is important throughout life.' Bestard added that 'one of the objectives of this programme, launched two years ago, is to foster sociability and encourage an active group lifestyle.'
This year, the programme has introduced some new activities, such as water bikes and shared dragon boat canoeing, where feasible.
