Andalucía coordinates measures to mitigate railway crisis impact on tourism

Manuel Gavira meets with provincial tourism boards in London to discuss initiatives aimed at enhancing air connections and promoting domestic tourism in Andalucía.

Andalucía coordinates measures to mitigate railway crisis impact on tourism

The second vice president of the Junta de Andalucía and Minister of Tourism, Justice, Deregulation and Local Administration, Manuel Gavira, has assessed the discussions held with provincial tourism board representatives regarding the impact of the railway crisis on Andalucía's tourism sector. This meeting took place during the World Travel Market (WTM) in London.

Gavira convened the meeting to gain insight into the challenges faced by each province following the railway accident and to develop a coordinated strategy to improve connectivity and maintain tourism activity during the remaining months of the year. He stated, "From the very beginning, we have reacted swiftly to minimise the consequences that the railway disruption may have on tourism and the economy of Andalucía."

He added, "We have gathered the heads of the provincial boards to listen to their needs, analyse the situation in each province, and coordinate a joint response. In the face of an exceptional situation, Andalucía responds with speed, coordination, and concrete measures."

Key actions discussed include enhancing air connections. Gavira explained that the Junta has already contacted airlines to request expansions on certain routes and to explore collaborative initiatives aimed at improving the connectivity of Andalucía's airports. Additionally, discussions are planned with road transport companies, including ALSA, to explore alternatives that will strengthen bus travel and mitigate mobility challenges arising from the railway situation.

"We are working to provide real alternatives for travellers. We want to reinforce both air and bus connections so that Andalucía remains an accessible and competitive destination," Gavira affirmed.

Another line of action agreed upon during the meeting is the launch of coordinated tourism promotion initiatives with the provincial boards to encourage local travel within the community. These campaigns will aim to stimulate inter-provincial travel and promote trips from major cities to other municipalities and inland destinations, particularly in the final months of the year. "We want to encourage the people of Andalucía to continue travelling within our region, to discover other destinations in our land, and to help sustain the activity of our tourism businesses," the minister explained.

Gavira emphasised the importance of collaboration between administrations and sector representatives to address the consequences of the railway crisis. He noted, "Behind tourism are thousands of businesses, self-employed individuals, workers, and families who depend on this activity, and it is our duty to act to ensure that connectivity issues have the least possible impact on their economy."

Finally, the second vice president highlighted that the meeting in London marks the beginning of a common line of work with provincial boards to develop initiatives focused on promotion, connectivity, and institutional collaboration. "We cannot remain idle in the face of a situation that affects one of the main economic engines of Andalucía. We are listening to the sector, coordinating with institutions, and planning actions to minimise the consequences of this crisis on our tourism," he concluded.

During the WTM, the minister also met with influencers and senior figures from the British tourism industry, discussing the current situation of this market, its trends, and priority segments for Andalucía. Representatives from companies such as Jet2 Holidays, Wizz Air, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), the International Golf Tour Operators Association (IAGTO), Adventure Travel Group, Pura Aventura, Advantage Travel, and TTG Media participated in the meeting. Topics included the evolving expectations of British travellers, strategic segments such as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), golf, and family travel; Andalucía's competitive position as a destination; and the balance between residents, visitors, and businesses.
