The City Council of Alicante has awarded a contract to Mediterráneo Obras y Asfaltos S.A. for the construction of a second tactical non-roundabout in the Las Atalayas industrial area. The project, which is funded by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (Ivace), has a budget of €277,702. The works are expected to be completed within three months.
Antonio Peral, the city’s Urban Planning councillor, explained that the first tactical non-roundabout was implemented in 2022 between Dracma and Chelín streets, marking a pioneering approach in Spain. This innovative design reimagined road intersections by integrating pedestrian space and greenery as key elements of urban planning.
Mari Carmen de España, the councillor for Employment and Development, noted that this model allows for the necessary circulation of industrial vehicles while simultaneously creating a central green space that enhances the urban environment and promotes a more user-friendly public space.
The success of the initial project has demonstrated the potential of such interventions as small-scale urban regeneration tools, capable of significantly transforming the image and usability of an industrial area. The new project aims to build upon this experience, viewing the second non-roundabout as a continuation and evolution of the strategy initiated with the first.
The planned non-roundabout will be located at the intersection of Dólar and Marco streets, with the technical project titled ‘Insertion of a seasonal soft pedestrian platform in the format of a tactical non-roundabout at the intersection of Marco and Dólar streets in the Las Atalayas industrial estate’ developed by Arvum Consultoría & Proyectos S.L.
