The delegate of the Xunta in Ferrol, Martina Aneiros, welcomed participants this morning at the social centre of Aviño in Valdoviño for a training event organised by the cultural association ASCM. This initiative is part of the project 'Maris: memory, art, network and inclusion', which has received funding from the Consellería do Mar through the Participatory Local Development Strategies (EDLP) and in collaboration with the Local Action Group of the Fishing Sector (GALP) A Mariña-Ortegal.
The training sessions focus on understanding the cultural maritime-fishing heritage, with particular emphasis on traditional maritime trades, seafaring culture, oral memory, and the coastal identity of the GALP A Mariña-Ortegal territory. The sessions are designed for both individuals with and without disabilities who are part of the inclusive volunteer group of ASCM, spanning a total of 35 hours over several sessions.
The 'Maris' project, which has received a regional contribution of €12,500 for the years 2026, 2027, and 2028, is structured in three phases. The first phase includes the training sessions that commenced today in Valdoviño. Following this, intergenerational meetings will be held to collect and preserve oral memories related to the sea, gathering testimonies, songs, proverbs, and experiences that are part of the intangible heritage of the region. The collected content will serve as the foundation for creating and performing an inclusive theatre piece featuring the participants.
The project will also include promotional and awareness-raising activities, such as events showcasing local fishing products. Aneiros highlighted the project's dual importance, stating that it "unites two fundamental issues: the preservation of a significant part of our history and identity, which is the culture linked to the sea, and, on the other hand, inclusion and participation." She congratulated the ASCM for their initiative and noted that the latest call for aid aimed at the Participatory Local Development Strategies (EDPL), co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), had a budget of €10.3 million for the years 2026-2028.
