The city of Vigo is facing a critical situation regarding its water supply, with reserves expected to reach a historic low this Thursday. The Eiras reservoir is currently at just 33.6% of its capacity, losing approximately 0.6 percentage points per day. Mayor Abel Caballero has indicated that the city has enough water guaranteed for 28 days.
Caballero explained that after 26 November, the city would have water for 58 days, but there could be concerns regarding its quality. He noted that the Eiras reservoir is experiencing record low levels for this time of year, stating it is at its “historic minimum for 2 November.”
The mayor highlighted the importance of the new water treatment plant established by the Concello de Vigo, which ensures that the city has access to quality water. “Without the treatment plant, Vigo would currently be facing water without quality guarantees,” he said.
Caballero also criticised the regional government, the Xunta, for not addressing this significant issue and merely waiting for rainfall to resolve the situation. He reiterated the urgent need to reduce the ecological flow of the river immediately and called for the construction of a dam upstream of the Oitavén river.
