Vigo aims to boost air routes to London, Paris, Alicante and Seville at Routes World 2026

The city of Vigo is set to take part in Routes World 2026 in Frankfurt, one of the leading international meetings in the aviation sector. Mayor Abel Caballero has revealed that the 2027 budget will include funds to promote new air routes from Vigo Airport.

Caballero announced that the city’s tourism councillor will attend the event, where Vigo will hold discussions with various airlines, particularly low-cost carriers, to secure new connections from the local airport and enhance route stability.

The mayor explained that the municipal delegation will inform airlines that Vigo is preparing a new public tender for tourism promotion linked to connections with London, Paris, Alicante, and Seville. Consequently, the city will allocate the necessary financial resources in the 2027 budget to fund these contracts, which will be awarded through a public competition.

“We want stability in flights and routes, and we have prepared the budget allocation for next year,”

Caballero stated. He reiterated that the city council will independently finance the promotion of these connections, following the refusal of the Xunta de Galicia and the Provincial Council of Pontevedra to participate in the proposed co-financing model by the municipal government. The mayor criticised both administrations for supporting air promotion initiatives at other Galician airports while not providing resources to secure routes from Vigo.

“The Xunta pays in Santiago and La Coruña, but in Vigo, they don’t pay a penny,”

he pointed out, defending the contracts for tourism promotion linked to air connections as a strategy used in other regions, such as Cantabria, Asturias, and Granada. “The only ones financially committed to attracting new flights to Vigo are the city council,”

the mayor concluded, reaffirming the municipal decision to continue the contracting process to strengthen the city’s air connectivity.
