Teruel hosts the 26th senior week with cultural and sports activities

The Santa Emerenciana Senior Association, together with the Teruel City Council, is hosting the 26th edition of Senior Week from 26 to 30 October. This event includes a variety of activities such as championships, health walks, talks, music, cinema, and a communal meal.

Teruel's mayor, Emma Buj, inaugurated the event, describing it as a "celebration of experience and coexistence". She encouraged the many attendees at the event's opening to enjoy the planned activities, which encompass leisure, culture, music, dance, and sports.

The programme runs from Monday, 26 October, to Friday, 30 October 2026, at the Santa Emerenciana Day Centre. It aims to promote active ageing, physical activity, health awareness, and social relationships among the elderly population of Teruel. The Santa Emerenciana Senior Association has committed to these goals for 26 years, striving to energise this demographic and transform the Day Centre into an open meeting space that fosters community and participation.

Activities for all tastes are scheduled throughout the week. The opening ceremony took place on Monday, 26 October, at 5:00 PM, attended by municipal representatives and officials from the Day Centre and the Senior Association. Following the inauguration, the centre's rondalla and choir performed a musical act at 5:30 PM.

On Tuesday, 27 October, the programme includes a petanque championship at 9:30 AM, followed by a health walk titled "The Sequoia of Teruel" at 10:00 AM, guided by biologist and professor José Carrasquer. This activity costs €3, which includes a ham sandwich and a bottle of water. The day also features a screening of the film "Going in Style" at 5:00 PM.

Wednesday, 28 October, will see a parchís championship at 9:30 AM, and at 11:00 AM, Dr Ángel Pueyo will give a talk on "Autumn and respiratory infections", focusing on prevention and care for common seasonal issues like colds, flu, sore throats, and bronchitis. In the afternoon, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the San León Lace Makers Association will hold a demonstration and practical class on lace-making.

On Thursday, 29 October, a guiñote championship will take place at 9:30 AM. At 5:00 PM, José Catalán, a senior trainer and longevity expert, will present a talk on "Successful Ageing", in collaboration with the Noteexcuses gym.

The final day, Friday, 30 October, begins with a mass at 12:00 PM at the Church of Los Paúles, supported by the Dementia Classroom, the rondalla, and the choir from the Santa Emerenciana Day Centre. At 1:00 PM, trophies will be awarded for the championships held during the Spring Days and the 26th Senior Week. The programme will conclude with a communal meal at 2:00 PM at Torico Gourmed-La Ronda, followed by dancing until 5:30 PM.

Throughout the week, an exhibition showcasing the work of users from the Dementia Classroom will also be open to the public. The inauguration of Senior Week was attended by Alicia Martín, Director of Social Services at the City Council, and Andrés Nolasco, President of the Association, along with a large group of members and the centre's rondalla and choir. This new edition reinforces the commitment of the Santa Emerenciana Senior Association and the Teruel City Council to the well-being of the elderly and to creating participatory spaces that contribute to an active, healthy, and socially enriching life.
