Mijas Lab, the local tourism cluster, held its fourth meeting at La Cala Resort to analyse the results of the recently concluded peak tourist season. The meeting revealed a highly satisfactory balance in terms of occupancy rates, visitor arrivals, and overall activity.
Presided over by Mayor Ana Mata and Tourism Councillor Francisco Jerez, the gathering brought together private sector stakeholders and municipal representatives to discuss the future of Mijas’ primary economic activity. A key focus was the upcoming Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España 2026 golf tournament, scheduled for 26 to 29 November at La Cala Golf, which will feature 75 players and be broadcast live to over 150 countries.
Sean Corte-Real, representing the Mijas Golf Course Association and director of La Cala Resort, provided details on additional activities linked to the golf event, including community engagement initiatives aimed at local schoolchildren and seniors. The anticipated economic impact of the tournament on other local tourism sectors was also highlighted.
The meeting underscored the significance of gastronomy as a fundamental promotional tool for the tourism industry. Mijas Lab agreed to explore the organisation of a gastronomic event featuring local restaurants and chefs to enhance the municipality's appeal.
Additionally, Councillor Daniel Gómez presented the Beach Plan for 2027-2030, which aims to extend the operational period of beach services from eight to eleven months a year. This initiative is expected to improve leisure offerings for both residents and visitors, including sunbeds, umbrellas, registered massage tents, and nautical zones.
Discussions also included plans for the Christmas campaign, emphasising the importance of collaboration between municipal initiatives and private sector participation to enhance the overall image of Mijas for residents and tourists alike.
Finally, Juan Miguel Marcos, representing the Costa del Sol Hotel Business Association (Aehcos) in Mijas, proposed that the tourism sector spearhead a solidarity initiative to support families facing difficulties, particularly those dealing with adverse medical diagnoses.
