Madrid prepares for all saints' day with extensive security measures

The city of Madrid is set to implement a comprehensive security operation for the upcoming all saints' day festivities, which will take place on 1 November. This year, the celebrations coincide with the increasingly popular Halloween, celebrated on the evening of 31 October.

The operation, outlined by Inma Sanz, the Deputy Mayor and spokesperson for municipal security and emergencies, involves coordination between several municipal services, including the Municipal Police, SAMUR-Protección Civil (emergency medical services), the Municipal Transport Company (EMT Madrid), and the municipal funeral services.

In total, 1,700 police officers will be deployed to oversee municipal cemeteries, ensure smooth access to these sites, monitor Halloween festivities in entertainment venues, and prevent vandalism on EMT buses. Specifically, 920 officers will focus on cemetery security and traffic management around these locations, while also addressing illegal street sales of flowers and plants.

On Halloween night, an additional 350 officers will inspect entertainment venues and parties, ensuring compliance with capacity limits, the presence of minors, and closing times. There will also be alcohol and drug checks in place.

In preparation for Halloween, SAMUR-Protección Civil will bolster its regular operations with 20 additional units and around 65 extra medical personnel.

Municipal funeral services will maintain continuous hours at the city's larger cemeteries during this period, while smaller cemeteries will remain open throughout the week. Additionally, various activities such as concerts and guided tours will be organised, including a new route exploring the origins and evolution of traditions associated with these dates.

EMT Madrid has increased services on eight bus lines connecting to major cemeteries, with additional reinforcements planned based on demand, particularly on 1 November, when the highest service increases are expected.
