The Madrid City Council has approved a renovation project for the plaza de la Duquesa de Osuna, located in the Barajas district. The works, to be carried out by the Department of Works and Equipment, are set to commence before the end of the year and will continue until the second half of 2028.
This area is situated in the Alameda de Osuna neighbourhood, adjacent to the Cultural Heritage site of the El Capricho gardens, on land that historically belonged to the Dukes of Osuna. The project is bordered by the paseo de la Alameda de Osuna to the south, the historic El Capricho garden to the west, the avenida de Logroño to the north, and the calle Joaquín Ibarra to the east.
With an investment of €6.7 million, the initiative aims to transform an underutilised area into a new public square linked to the historic ensemble of El Capricho, where heritage, nature, and public space will integrate to create an accessible and sustainable environment.
The intervention will involve the pedestrianisation of over 6,000 square metres, the creation of 5,500 square metres of landscaped areas, and the planting of 90 new trees and 10,000 shrubs. Additionally, heritage elements will be preserved and restored to be incorporated into the new public space.
The redesigned plaza will be organised into two main areas: the plaza de la Fuente and the Huerta Valenciana. The plaza de la Fuente will feature a landscaped area dominated by centenary plane trees and a historic fountain, which will be restored for use as a drinking water source. The design of the Huerta Valenciana will recall the memory of the former garden and will consist of a series of green spaces connected by accessible pathways, including children's play areas and a space for puppetry.
The project also includes the reorganisation of the surrounding roadways to enhance accessibility, establishing pedestrian access while ensuring the entry and exit for local residents.
