The cultural project ‘Lav_art 2026: Cartography of Contemporary Art in Lavapiés’ showcases around thirty galleries and spaces dedicated to contemporary creation in this vibrant neighbourhood of Madrid's Centro district. The initiative, spearheaded by the Municipal Council of Centro, aims to promote these artistic spaces through an interactive map, a directory, and documentary sheets, alongside a programme of cultural activities running until 22 November.
Marta Rivera de la Cruz, the Delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sport, presented the project at La Casa Encendida, emphasising that “Lav_art is a great opportunity to discover the richness and diversity of contemporary creation that coexists in Lavapiés, one of the most culturally active neighbourhoods in Madrid.” She highlighted that the “cartography will facilitate access to the artistic spaces in the area, help bring contemporary art to new audiences, and allow for a better understanding of the creators' work.”
The presentation concluded with a performance by Línea 12, the winners of the III Microconcert Competition Destino San Cayetano 2026. The Lav_art 2026 catalogue proposes a journey through the artistic activities taking place in Lavapiés, an area known for its significant presence of galleries and spaces dedicated to contemporary art.
This inaugural edition has seen collaboration from the Lavapiés Merchants Association (EnLavapiés), local contemporary art galleries, the Montemadrid Casa Encendida Foundation, the Museo Reina Sofía, and Cervezas Alhambra. Lav_art 2026 brings together galleries, workshops, exhibition spaces, and centres dedicated to contemporary creation, presenting them through an accessible and interactive map that showcases the diverse proposals coexisting in the neighbourhood, from established galleries to emerging initiatives and multidisciplinary projects.
In addition to serving as a reference tool for visitors, professionals, and interested audiences, the cartography offers a comprehensive view of the cultural landscape in Lavapiés and facilitates access to a network of spaces that engage in intense artistic activity throughout the year.
Programme of activities
The Lav_art 2026 project is complemented by a cultural programme running until 22 November. The activities include over thirty exhibitions, openings, artist meetings, and sessions organised by the galleries and spaces involved in the project. Following the launch, the programme will continue with ‘Ara Tours’, which will allow the public to explore a selection of participating galleries and spaces on 24 and 29 October, as well as 7, 12, and 21 November.
The calendar also features discussions focused on collecting, the role of art agents, and fairs at the Museo Reina Sofía and La Casa Encendida, along with artistic interventions in Arturo Barea Square and Nelson Mandela Square.
