The Catalan government has officially recognised the Casal Català in Oslo as a Catalan community abroad. Founded on 28 June 2025, the association has around 80 members and serves as a meeting point, support network, and cohesive force for the Catalan community residing in Norway's capital and its surroundings.
The Casal Català aims to promote Catalan culture and language, enhance international awareness of Catalonia, and encourage youth participation. It is the third officially recognised Catalan community in Norway, following the Casal Català in Tromsø, recognised in 2021, and the Catalan-Norwegian Association, which covers Bergen, Oslo, and Stavanger and was recognised in 2025.
Collaboration with the Catalan government
The Catalan government's delegation in the Nordic and Baltic countries has maintained a close collaboration with the Casal Català in Oslo, assisting the entity in its recognition process and participating in community events. Notable collaborations include a cultural meeting held in September last year to officially establish the entity and the celebration of the Diada Nacional de Catalunya, Catalonia's national day.
Growing network of Catalan communities
Currently, there are over a hundred officially recognised and active Catalan entities worldwide. These communities serve as meeting points and references, fostering connections to Catalonia through language, culture, and other areas, while promoting knowledge of the region by collaborating with local institutions and organisations.
The official recognition as Catalan communities abroad enables these associations to benefit from the services, aid, and support provided by the Catalan government. They also gain the opportunity to participate in the Council of Catalonia Abroad and engage in various gatherings and events.
