The mayor of Calahorra, Mónica Arceiz, has welcomed the Improyayas theatre group to commend them for their recent achievements, including two awards for their documentary ‘Protagonistas’. Last weekend, they received the Audience Award at the ‘Octubre Corto’ short film festival held at the Teatro Cervantes in Arnedo. Earlier this month, the Basilicata International Film Festival (BIFF) in Rionero, Italy, awarded them the prize for Best Documentary.
During the reception, attended by the councillor for Culture, Reyes Zapata, and the councillor for Senior Citizens, Isabel Sáenz, Arceiz praised the actresses for their accomplishments, highlighting their talent, enthusiasm, and ability to demonstrate that creativity and the desire to learn have no age limit.
“It is a pride for the city to have women like you who are a motivating example for many others and who carry the name of Calahorra to other municipalities and countries, being magnificent ambassadors. Congratulations on your effort, your passion for theatre, and your spontaneity and ability to move the audience,”
Arceiz stated. She also emphasised the importance of supporting cultural initiatives that promote participation, culture, and active ageing, contributing to the enrichment of Calahorra's social and cultural life.
On Friday, 6 November, the Improyayas group will perform at the Ideal theatre starting at 20:00, kicking off the new programming for the last two months of the year. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the award-winning documentary ‘Protagonistas’.
Improyayas is an improvisational theatre group made up of 13 senior women, all grandmothers, directed by Javier Martínez-Losa. On stage, they create stories based on audience suggestions, blending humour and intelligence. The project originated in 2024 from an acting workshop initiated by the Calahorra City Council and the Caja Rioja Foundation, and is now supported by the production company La Rural.
