La Laguna and Mexico unite heritage and culture to commemorate Finados and Muertos

The Ayuntamiento de La Laguna, through its departments of Festivals, Heritage and Culture, in collaboration with the Fundación Canaria México Canarias, is set to host a comprehensive programme of commemorative events titled ‘The architecture of memory’ for the fifth consecutive year.

Running from 29 October to 7 November, the programme will feature altars, guided tours, heritage walks, children's activities, and a Catrinas parade. Adolfo Cordobés, the councillor for Heritage in La Laguna, emphasised that “these days, La Laguna becomes a meeting point for different cultures and multiple countries, combining the scientific aspect of events like Campus América with the cultural component marked by traditions and the memory of loved ones who are no longer with us.”

Maria Ángeles Baca, the honorary consul of Mexico in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, highlighted that “this initiative is one of the most important commitments we have throughout the year, as through these activities we promote greater knowledge of Canary culture and our Latin American traditions.”

Yolanda Cordobés, director of the Fundación México Canarias, noted that “this edition has some particularities we wish to share with the public, especially related to the Night of Finados.” One of the new features this year is the ringing of the bells from the Torre de La Concepción, led by bell ringer Erick Sacramento, during the night of 31 October to 1 November.

The programme includes guided routes to altars set up by the Mexican Foundation and other points of interest, with the participation of nine schools from the municipality. Under the title ‘Are there little saints? Bread for God’, the traditions of the islands related to these dates will be introduced to the younger generation.

The popular Catrinas Parade will take place on 7 November at 17:00, starting from Plaza Doctor Olivera, featuring participants dressed in attire representative of this iconic Mexican figure. The day will conclude with a concert by the mariachi group Mencey Azteca and a DJ session featuring traditional music from Mexico.

Yolanda Cordobés expressed gratitude once again for the collaboration of the Ayuntamiento de La Laguna and the involvement of other entities and institutions within the historic centre included in the altar route.
