The Diputación de Albacete showcased the region's extra virgin olive oil at the fifth Oil Fair in Ontur, an event that has become a prominent platform for promoting local agro-food products and the cultural and tourist resources of the municipality. During the fair, which took place from 30 October to 1 November, Gómez expressed his condolences for the victims of a tragic train accident in Urda on 28 October.
Gómez, alongside Ontur's mayor, Jesús López, participated in an olive oil tasting, sampling products from local mills, including 'Aceite del Altiplano', 'Ontalba', and 'Pío del Ramo'. He commended the producers for their outstanding work in establishing the region's olive oil as a significant reference both locally and beyond, while also acknowledging the essential role of local farmers.
Following the tasting, Gómez attended a lecture titled 'Extra virgin olive oil, more than just food', delivered by Javier Valiente. He then toured the artisan and agro-food market, engaging with various stallholders who noted the positive atmosphere and warm reception of this year's event.
Gómez praised the efforts of the Ontur Town Council in organising the fair and expressed gratitude for the involvement of local associations and residents, emphasising that collective engagement is vital for transforming local resources into opportunities. He stated, 'In our villages, important things are built together, from the ground up.'
He further highlighted that the fair serves as more than just a commercial showcase; it is an opportunity to promote Ontur and celebrate local production capabilities. Gómez pointed out that olive oil, alongside wine, is a cornerstone of Ontur's economy and identity. He stressed the importance of initiatives like this to enhance visibility and value for these products in an increasingly competitive market.
Gómez remarked, 'It is not enough to produce well; we must also tell the story behind our products, give them visibility, and ensure that visitors and consumers recognise their value. We need to work towards ensuring that our agro-food sector thrives, generating wealth in the territory.'
He also advocated for the consumption of local products, noting that supporting local farmers and preserving the territory is crucial for the future of rural communities. 'When we choose our products, we are also choosing to support our farmers and contribute to the future of our towns,' he added.
Finally, Gómez reaffirmed the provincial institution's commitment to the agro-food sector and initiatives that promote quality products, heritage, and traditions. He championed extra virgin olive oil as a key ambassador for the province.
The fair featured a diverse programme, including artisan markets, traditional workshops, children's activities, guided tours, theatrical performances, live music, folklore shows, and a popular dance. The 'Oliva de Oro' award was presented to Ángel Torre Sánchez, and the event also included a honey tasting and a wine fair in collaboration with local wineries and associations, expanding the showcase of agro-food products from the municipality.
