The University of Vigo (UVigo) has recognised its top student athletes in a ceremony held at the Faculty of Education and Sport Sciences. Nine students, who participated in university world championships, achieved a total of eight podium finishes across various sports, including canoeing, squash, beach sports, and sailing.
The rector, Carmen García Mateo, emphasised that there are no better ambassadors for the university than these students, who have demonstrated their ability to combine high-level sports with their studies. The event also featured contributions from Dolores González, the vice-rector for Students and University Life, and Mauro Domínguez, a canoeist representing the honourees.
During the ceremony, the students' achievements were acknowledged, including two golds, four silvers, and two bronzes in international competitions. García Mateo highlighted the significance of this recognition, not only for the sporting results but also for the collective effort behind each individual success.
The honoured students excelled in various sports, notably Irene Lata and María Paraja, who won a gold medal in the K2 500 metres at the University World Canoeing Championship, alongside other notable achievements in squash and beach sports. The rector concluded the event by thanking families and federations for their support and reaffirming UVigo's commitment to the holistic development of its students.
