The Spanish government has issued a positive assessment of a social-democratic proposal to regulate housing cooperatives. While officials have indicated that certain aspects of the bill will need to be refined, they are committed to moving it forward.
Abraham Cejudo reports that the government has highlighted the need to clarify references to housing funds, as well as mechanisms for promotion and financing. Additionally, they aim to address existing regulations to prevent duplication.
“These are aspects, some legislative and others technical, of the proposed law. Negotiable within the legislative process, the philosophy of the text aligns with the government's intentions,”
The initiative is being supported by organisations such as L'Estaló and Arrel, which are promoting the cooperative model in the country. However, the government has warned that it currently lacks land to allocate for the future cooperatives to build their housing projects.
