Spain secures hard-fought victory against Finland in Manzanares

The Spanish national futsal team commenced its campaign for the 2028 World Cup with a challenging 3-1 victory against Finland at the newly inaugurated Manzanares Arena. This match marked Spain's first official FIFA game on home soil as reigning European champions.

The arena was filled with a vibrant atmosphere, drawing fans from across the country, although the majority were local supporters who rallied behind the team when needed. Spain faced a determined Finnish side, which had been anticipated by coach Jesús Velasco, who warned of their solid defensive capabilities and counter-attacking threats.

Daniel had the first opportunity for Spain, but his one-on-one attempt was thwarted by the Finnish goalkeeper. Finland responded with a couple of shots that tested Spanish goalkeeper Dídac, who remained resolute. The breakthrough came when Pablo Muñoz scored after a solo effort, firing a cross-shot into the net, marking his second goal as a full international.

Despite Spain's dominance, Finland remained physically robust, and after the break, the Spanish side continued to control the match but struggled to create clear chances. Finland capitalised on a set-piece to equalise with an excellent volley from Sylla, which invigorated Spain's pursuit of regaining the lead.

Novoa came close with a shot that hit the post, but shortly after, Ricardo restored Spain's advantage with a direct free kick, making it 2-1. He too found the post again with another attempt. Spain maintained pressure, but Finland remained in contention until the final minutes, opting for a five-player formation which ultimately led to a third goal for Spain, scored by Antonio from his own half.

This goal provided the necessary cushion for Spain to secure the victory, marking a positive start on their journey towards the World Cup. Daniel Gabriel, a player for Quesos El Hidalgo Manzanares FS, played a significant role in the match and expressed his excitement about representing the national team in his home arena, stating, “It gave me goosebumps.”
