The Spanish men's futsal team is gearing up for their debut against Finland at Manzanares Arena, which will kick off the qualification phase for the 2028 World Cup. With tickets for the match sold out, the national team is completing their preparations at the venue.
On Sunday, following a training session, the players engaged with local fans, allowing them to meet the squad led by coach Jesús Velasco. The team has been training intensively since last week, starting in Alcázar de San Juan, and is now fine-tuning their strategies on the court in Manzanares.
Coach Velasco highlighted the excellent physical condition of the players and the positive atmosphere within the team. As they approach the match against the Nordic side, he has warned of Finland's physical prowess. Consequently, the coaching staff has emphasised the need for a dynamic pace, focusing on quick transitions and keeping the ball moving to avoid a positional game that could favour their opponents.
Local connections
This match holds special significance for two players: goalkeeper Antonio Navarro and pivot Daniel Gabriel. Navarro, a former player for Quesos El Hidalgo Manzanares FS, expressed his joy at returning to what he calls his “second home” while representing the national team. He noted that the hard work put in during training will prepare them for this debut and future commitments, including the upcoming Finalissima in Brazil.
Meanwhile, Daniel Gabriel is set to play his first official match with ‘La Roja’ in front of his home crowd. Velasco remarked that Gabriel's selection is a result of his outstanding performance throughout the season, stating, “he has earned his place here.” For Daniel, wearing the national jersey in a packed Manzanares Arena is both an honour and an added motivation after rigorous training sessions.
High expectations
The match has generated significant excitement in Manzanares, which is celebrating its designation as a European Sports Town for 2026. The nearly 2,000 seats in the arena sold out quickly, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere as fans rally behind the team in pursuit of their first three points.
After Sunday’s training, the players took time to show their appreciation to the gathered fans, participating in a signing session for autographs and photographs.
