musical theatre show 'el ramper' by jesús bienvenido at university of cádiz today

the university of cádiz is set to present the musical theatre show el ramper, starring singer and composer jesús bienvenido, in an event exclusively for the university community. the performance will take place today at 20:00 in the salón de actos of the aulario carmelo garcía barroso on the jerez campus.

this event is organised by the ministry of territorial policy and democratic memory as part of the spain in freedom / 50 years programme, in collaboration with the university extension service of the vice-rectorate for sustainability and culture at the university of cádiz.

weeks later, the show will also be performed on 3 december at 20:00 in the salón de actos of the escuela técnica superior in algeciras.

el ramper is a work created and composed by jesús bienvenido that blends music and theatre to address the repression faced by carnival artists in cadiz during the franco regime following the 1936 coup d'état. the narrative unfolds through the intimate story of its protagonist, nicknamed ramper due to his connection to a murga inspired by a famous madrid clown from the 1920s, interweaving memories, texts, and diverse rhythms including peruvian waltz, landó, circus music, and flamenco styles like malagueña.

the performance encourages reflection on historical memory, the value of art as a form of freedom, and the necessity of recognising the dignity of repression victims. with an extensive career as an author, composer, and performer, both solo and for artists like pasión vega, as well as his notable contributions to the carnival of cadiz, jesús bienvenido frequently presents various shows across spain. during these sessions, he combines conversation with performances of some of his most representative pieces, sharing his creative experiences with the audience.

admission is free and exclusively available to the university community, with prior reservation required. each individual may request a maximum of two tickets.
