More than 2,000 personnel to ensure security for National Day celebrations

On October 7, 2026, Madrid is preparing for the upcoming National Day celebrations on October 12, which will feature a tribute to the Spanish flag and a traditional military parade presided over by Their Majesties the Kings of Spain. An extensive security operation involving over 2,000 personnel, including police officers, emergency services, and medical teams, will be in place for the event.

The coordination of this security operation was finalized during a meeting held at the Delegation of the Government of Spain in the Community of Madrid. Attendees included representatives from various agencies, such as the Citizen Security Unit of the Government Delegation, the Royal Household, the Presidency of the Government, the Ministry of Defense, the Army's Garrison Directorate, the General Police Headquarters, the Madrid Police Chief, the Civil Guard Command, and special police commissions from the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, as well as National Heritage and the Madrid City Council (Municipal Police, SAMUR-Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Mobility Agents). The meeting was chaired by the Government Delegate, Francisco Martín.

This security operation aims to ensure that the tribute to the Spanish flag and the military parade proceed smoothly. The National Police, which will take the lead in security, will deploy agents from the Police Intervention Unit, Protection and Reaction Unit, Citizen Security Brigade, Air Unit, Cavalry, Canine Guides, Underground Brigade, Information Brigade, Mobile Brigade, and GEO (Special Operations Group). Additionally, police stations from the Centro, Retiro, and Salamanca districts will be directly involved.

The Civil Guard will primarily assist with external closures, involving the Traffic Group, and will ensure security at the Royal Palace, where the official reception hosted by the Kings will take place following the parade. They will be joined by agents from the Madrid Municipal Police, Mobility, and emergency services.

Aerial and Ground Parade

A total of 3,850 men and 530 women from the Armed Forces, State Security Forces, and other public civil institutions will participate in the aerial and ground parade on October 12 in Madrid. The parade route will extend along the Paseo del Prado and Paseo de Recoletos, starting at the Glorieta del Emperador Carlos V and concluding at Plaza de Colón.

Reason for Celebration

The National Day of Spain is celebrated on October 12 and commemorates Christopher Columbus's discovery of America in 1492. The celebration was officially established in 1918 by King Alfonso XIII and originally honored Spain's global influence.
