The Spanish government has announced an allocation of €1.5 million to the Community of Madrid as part of its commitment to restoring historic buildings. This funding is part of the broader 2% Cultural Programme, which aims to invest €80 million in the preservation of 78 monuments across Spain.
The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, and the Ministry of Culture. The list of approved projects corresponds to the 2025 aid call, with a total projected investment of €133 million from various entities and administrations, including state contributions.
Among the 78 projects receiving funding, the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena in Valladolid and the Monastery of Sant Feliu de Guíxols lead the list. The 2% Cultural Programme mandates that 2% of public works contracts be allocated to the conservation and enhancement of Spain's historical heritage or the promotion of artistic creativity.
The total aid of €80 million will support the recovery of 78 cultural heritage sites declared of cultural interest, distributed across 73 municipalities. The Mixed Commission for the 2% Cultural Programme has approved the provisional list of projects after receiving 422 applications.
The average grant requested for the submitted projects is approximately €860,000, covering around 65% of the total cost of each project. The resolution benefits monuments located in 14 autonomous communities, with the following distribution of funds:

The Mixed Commission has submitted its proposal for these projects to the Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, Isabel Rodríguez, for provisional resolution. Additionally, a new call for €45 million is expected to be announced before the end of 2026, indicating the government's ongoing commitment to heritage recovery.
The 2% Cultural Programme serves as the primary tool for the Spanish government to ensure the conservation of the country's historical, cultural, and artistic heritage, prioritising job creation and urban or rural regeneration. Since its inception, 1,346 applications have been approved for projects totalling €1.362 billion, with the programme contributing €854.9 million, representing 62.8% of the total execution cost. The 78 projects from the 2025 call will further reinforce the commitment of the three ministries involved in heritage conservation.
