Geoparque Villuerca-Ibores-Jara hosts tenth geodyssey event

The Geoparque Villuerca-Ibores-Jara is set to celebrate the tenth edition of its geodyssey, titled “A journey through the history of the earth”, with a diverse programme of events scheduled from 6 to 29 November.

Javier Díaz Cieza, the deputy for Demographic Challenge and Protected Natural Spaces of the Diputación de Cáceres, announced the initiative, which is being organised by the Local Action Group APRODERVI, along with local municipalities, Geovilluercas companies, and the Geopark entity, supported by the Diputación de Cáceres and the Junta de Extremadura.

This year marks a significant milestone, as it coincides with the 15th anniversary of the Geopark's designation and precedes its revalidation in spring 2027.

The programme will unfold over four weekends, featuring 44 varied activities that encompass gastronomy, nature, adventure sports, culture, and stargazing. Díaz Cieza highlighted the involvement of local businesses, which reflects the community's commitment and strength.

During the presentation, attended by Óscar Mateos, the General Director of Tourism for the Junta de Extremadura, and María Ángeles Díaz, the president of APRODERVI and mayor of Berzocana, the detailed programme was outlined, offering up to 1,100 places across four thematic blocks:

  • Geosabor: From 6 to 9 November, featuring 19 activities focused on tasting local products such as olive oil, cheese, and honey in Alía, Cañamero, Valdelacasa, Carrascalejo, and Berzocana, including wine and craft beer tastings in Guadalupe.
  • Geocultura: On 14 and 15 November, with 11 activities exploring the secrets of Guadalupe, the caves and rock paintings of Berzocana, the olive groves and oil of Carrascalejo and Valdelacasa, the history of the Vetones in Aldeacentenera, and the photographic legacy of Eugene Smith in Deleitosa.
  • Geoaventura: On 21 and 22 November, offering 11 activities to discover the Geopark, including a route along the Acueducto de las Herrerías in Campillo de Deleitosa, a workshop on map orientation at the Mina Costanaza in Logrosán, a geological route to Pico Villuercas, and various hiking routes to Cabañas del Castillo in Cañamero.
  • Geoestrellas: On 28 and 29 November, featuring three activities to enjoy a Starlight Tourism Destination in Alía, Guadalupe, and Cañamero, showcasing the area's exceptional stargazing opportunities.

All activities are free of charge, but pre-registration is required through the Geopark's website. María Ángeles Díaz encouraged the public to participate, stating, “Choose a route, sign up for an activity, come with your family, friends, or that person you’ve been meaning to do something different with. Come to walk, learn, gaze at the stars, and most importantly, enjoy, because perhaps on a trail, during a tasting, or while contemplating our sky, you will experience an unforgettable moment or find a reason to love this Geopark.”
