The mayor of Chiclana, José María Román, recently presided over the presentation of the Three Wise Men, the Star of the East, and the Royal Postman in a ceremony held at the Town Hall's Plenary Hall. The event was attended by Fede Díaz, the municipal delegate for celebrations, Juan Jesús Sánchez, president of the Chiclana Association of Wise Men, as well as members of the association and their families.
José Gómez Vela will represent King Melchor, Antonio Aragón ‘Zurdete’ will take on the role of King Gaspar, and José Alba Heredia ‘Bolly’ will portray King Baltasar. Additionally, María José Galea Peña has been appointed as the Star of the East, while Pedro Luis Meléndez Leal will serve as the Royal Postman.
During the event, Mayor Román highlighted the emotional significance of being a Wise Man, stating, “There are many joys, but also difficult moments when we visit people to bring them a bit of hope and happiness.” He also noted that the Royal Court will have a busy schedule of events leading up to Christmas.
Román explained that the Association of Wise Men was established in the context of the campaign ‘No Child Without Toys’. He noted that a few years ago, they had to assist around 1,500 children, a number that has now decreased to fewer than 400, although the age range has expanded, indicating significant improvement in family situations. “It is important to continue helping those children who still need support,” he added.
The mayor praised the association's efforts, stating, “This Association of Wise Men is emulated by other associations throughout Andalusia for the great work it does.” He emphasised that the most important aspect is the joy of children and ensuring they enjoy these festive days to the fullest.
Juan Jesús Sánchez congratulated the members of the Royal Court, describing the selection process as one of the most challenging responsibilities for the association. “We seek individuals who represent our city,” he remarked, adding that their role goes beyond leading the Cabalgata de la Ilusión (Parade of Illusion) on 5 January, as they will be working throughout the year to ensure all children receive gifts.
José Gómez expressed his joy at being chosen as King Melchor, sharing that he received the news on the same day his daughter gave birth to his grandchild. “It was a day filled with happiness,” he said, reflecting on the innocence and joy of children. He added, “The beauty lies in enjoying the days ahead and helping the Association of Wise Men and the people of Chiclana.”
Antonio Aragón shared his excitement about being named King Gaspar, especially as he prepares to dress his grandchildren as pages. “I am very emotional and grateful to everyone who chose me,” he said.
José Alba ‘Bolly’ expressed his gratitude to his family and the association for his nomination as a Wise Man. “I am thrilled with this appointment and want to congratulate my fellow members of the Royal Court,” he stated, acknowledging the importance of the role for children.
Pedro Meléndez thanked the Association of Wise Men for nominating him as Royal Postman and the Town Hall for confirming his role. “What drives us is the joy of children, and I have a great desire to embody the figure of the Royal Postman,” he said, assuring children that he would dedicate all necessary time to collect their letters.
Lastly, María José Peña expressed her excitement about being named the Star of the East. “I thought it was a joke, but since that day, I have had a smile that my children notice in class,” she said, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to create unforgettable Christmas memories for her family.
