Alicante strengthens fire services with new command post and ladder truck

On October 5, 2026, the Alicante City Council announced plans to invest 1.5 million euros in the acquisition of two specialized vehicles aimed at reinforcing the Fire Prevention, Extinction, and Rescue Service (SPEIS).

Julio Calero, the city’s Security Councillor, emphasized the importance of modernizing the fleet, stating, "We continue to improve the resources and fleet of SPEIS, from specialized protective equipment to trucks and vans, to respond to extraordinary services and routine operations."

The upcoming purchases include an Advanced Command Vehicle equipped with the latest communication technologies and a ladder truck designed for high-rise emergency responses. These vehicles will enhance the existing fleet operated from the central fire station, ‘Idelfonso Prats’, located on Avenida Locutor Vicente Hipólito in Playa de San Juan, and the auxiliary station ‘Jesús González Soria’ on Avenida Jaume II.

The municipal government approved a public tender in its last session of September, which is divided into two lots for the procurement of the fire vehicles. The total budget for the tender is set at €1,553,744.06, with €1,245,678 allocated for the ladder truck and €308,066 for the advanced command vehicle.

Calero noted, "This new tender represents progress in enhancing the specialized resources and vehicle fleet of Alicante's firefighters, a corps that requires high specialization and advanced tools to handle various emergencies, from fires to natural disasters."

In recent years, efforts have been made to renew and modernize all SPEIS resources, including personal protective equipment and additional gear, as well as improving the vehicle fleet with trucks, vans, and boats to address specialized operations such as diving activities and traffic accidents, in addition to standard fire interventions in urban and rural areas.

The workforce has also seen advancements, with over 175 personnel, including firefighters and command staff. Currently, a selection process is underway for 15 additional firefighter positions, which will also create a temporary employment pool to fill vacancies.
