Alicante is set to enhance the San Gabriel health centre with the transfer of a building on Calle Pedreguer to the Conselleria de Sanidad, the regional health department of the Generalitat Valenciana. This decision follows the acquisition of the property in 2024, which was prompted by the need for new healthcare facilities to improve public service delivery in the neighbourhood.
The building, which spans 1,963 square metres and previously housed a supermarket, has been inspected by municipal and regional technicians to ensure it meets the necessary requirements for conversion into a health centre. Following the completion of the necessary administrative procedures, the transfer of the property to the Generalitat Valenciana will be finalised to facilitate its intended public use.
The Department of Heritage has opted for a legal mechanism known as external demanial mutation, which allows the transfer of ownership between public administrations without altering the property's intended purpose. In this case, the building was specifically acquired for healthcare use, addressing a previously established healthcare need, and is being transferred to the competent administration for the effective implementation and provision of the service.
Moreover, this legal arrangement stipulates that if the building is not used for the intended public service or ceases to be designated for it in the future, it will revert to the City Council along with all its belongings and accessories.
With the establishment of the San Gabriel health centre, Alicante is set to launch four new health centres in total. The other three centres are located in La Torreta, Garbinet, and La Condomina, with an overall investment exceeding €30 million from the Generalitat Valenciana.
