Xunta extends €2 million loan scheme for Galician wineries until 16 December

The regional minister of Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, has confirmed that the Xunta de Galicia will keep open its loan scheme aimed at supporting local wineries in purchasing grapes until 16 December. This initiative has a budget of €2 million.

During a visit to Santiago Roma wineries, Lorenzana highlighted that the scheme aims to provide liquidity and facilitate access to financing under advantageous conditions, as the Xunta subsidises the interest and fees associated with the loans taken out for grape purchases.

The loan scheme for 2026 has been available since 5 August and is designed to assist Galician wineries during one of the most financially demanding periods of the year, enabling them to acquire grape harvests and ensure timely payments to grape growers.

In the previous three editions of this scheme (2023-2025), a total of 119 wineries benefited, mobilising over €41.7 million in financing and receiving €2.1 million in loans. So far in this current edition, ten applications have been registered, amounting to a total financial operation of €3.62 million.

Lorenzana praised Santiago Roma wineries as a family-run business with nearly thirty years of history, known for prioritising quality and artisanal methods to produce award-winning wines.

Galicia is home to five Denominations of Origin (Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras, and Monterrei) and five Protected Geographical Indications, encompassing 13,400 grape growers and 479 wineries, with a commercial wine value exceeding €200 million.

The 2025 grape harvest concluded with nearly 76 million kilograms collected, marking it as the third most abundant since records began, following the harvests of 2011 and 2023. In this context, the financing initiative aims to bolster the competitiveness of a sector that is crucial for the economy and rural areas, representing the values of the Galicia Calidade brand.
