On October 8, 2026, Xabel Vegas, spokesperson for Convocatoria por Asturies, expressed confidence that the upcoming plenary session will be crucial for strengthening rights in the Autonomous Community of Asturias. The session will discuss two significant laws: the future LGTBI law and the Childhood and Adolescence law.
Vegas noted that the anticipated approval of the LGTBI law would end an "anomaly," as all but two autonomous communities, including Asturias, have had their own legal frameworks for years. He emphasized that this law fulfills a "historic demand" from the LGTBI community and is part of an agreement made with the Federación Socialista Asturiana (FSA) within the Asturian government.
The new law comes at a critical time, given the rise in homophobic attacks in recent years, which Vegas attributes to hate speech, particularly from the far right. He stated, "We must stop this scourge," referring to the ongoing violence faced by the community.
Regarding the Childhood and Adolescence law, Vegas described it as a "well-crafted" piece of legislation and expressed confidence that the Popular Party (PP) would not vote against it, as many of their amendments have been accepted. He believes it will successfully pass.
Culture and Identity Law
The plenary will also consider the Culture and Identity bill, which was jointly proposed by IU Convocatoria and PSOE. According to Vegas, the aim is to organize the Asturian cultural system and establish a cultural industries agency, addressing a demand from the sector.
This initiative is also a commitment made by his group following opposition from right-wing parties to the official status of Asturian and Eo-Naviego languages. The law seeks to enhance their protection and promote normalization within the limits of the legal framework.
Due to the urgency of the matter, the law has been presented as a proposition rather than a draft, which allows for a quicker process since it is initiated by the Parliament itself. Vegas predicts, "It will be a fantastic law."
