‘Ventanas al Prado’, a project resulting from the collaboration between the Museo del Prado and the Gijón/Xixón City Council, will be inaugurated this Thursday at 8:30 PM. The event will be open to the public and will feature lighting and live music in the plaza of journalist Arturo Arias.
This initiative, which begins in Gijón and will expand to other cities, aims to promote the collections of the Prado and make them more accessible to the public. The iconic Tabacalera building, located in the historic Cimavilla neighborhood, has been chosen as the venue for this pioneering action, which seeks to bring art and Spain's major art gallery closer to everyday citizens.
The project includes 29 backlit reproductions from the collection of the Museo Nacional del Prado, which will take on new significance when displayed in a context intentionally different from their original settings. It serves as an invitation to deepen the understanding of painting, artists, and the subjects of the works.
The curatorial project has been led by the Asturian studio La Rectoral, headed by Sara Moro and Ricardo Villoria. ‘Ventanas al Prado’ will remain on display until January and is based on the premise of connecting two heritages: the industrial memory of a building that is part of Gijón/Xixón's identity and centuries of unique and universal Spanish painting through the collections of the Museo Nacional del Prado.
Additionally, a comprehensive program of activities will be organized by the Municipal Culture Foundation in collaboration with the Museo del Prado, aimed at educational institutions in the city, along with a series of lectures. The goal is to engage younger audiences and the wider community with the museum's heritage. A corresponding catalog will also be published for the project.
