Santander launches organic waste campaign with new brown bin

Acciona-Oxital, the joint venture tasked with street cleaning and waste collection in Santander, is set to launch a campaign aimed at supporting residents in the gradual implementation of a new brown bin designated for the selective collection of organic waste. The campaign will commence tomorrow, October 6, 2026.

The initiative seeks to provide citizens with essential information on how to properly separate organic waste and to explain the importance of doing so. The introduction of the brown bin will occur gradually, starting on October 19 in areas that already have new containers for general waste, packaging, and paper and cardboard, thereby completing existing waste collection islands.

Following this, older containers will be replaced to facilitate the full implementation of the new system, with the placement of the brown bins expected to conclude by mid-January.

Information for Residents

The campaign includes an outreach and training program designed to address citizens' questions and ease their transition to the new waste separation system. An itinerant information stand will visit various neighborhoods in Santander to engage residents, answer questions, and provide information about organic waste separation. Residents can also collect a free organic waste kit, which includes a specially designed domestic bin, a roll of compostable bags, and an explanatory brochure.

The kit will be available starting tomorrow at the Citizen Attention Offices located at Plaza de la Leña number 1 and Calle César Llamazares number 4. The information stand will kick off in Nueva Montaña and will continue throughout October and November in different neighborhoods and central areas of the city from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Educational Initiatives

The campaign will also reach educational institutions in Santander through workshops and talks tailored for primary and secondary school students. The goal is to introduce young people to concepts such as the circular economy and selective separation, helping them understand the importance of correctly sorting the waste they generate daily.

After this initial phase targeting the general public, the campaign will extend to large producers of organic waste, with specific actions to facilitate proper separation and management. A door-to-door collection service will be implemented for the hospitality and restaurant sector (HORECA), enabling these establishments to manage the organic waste generated in their operations more efficiently.

What Goes in the Brown Bin?

The brown bin is designated for organic waste resulting from food preparation and consumption, including fruit and vegetable scraps, meat and fish, cooked food, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, seafood, and nuts. However, items such as plastics, packaging, glass, ceramics, diapers, sanitary products, wipes, cigarette butts, used cooking oil, pet waste, chewing gum, ashes, non-compostable coffee capsules, soil, and garden waste should not be deposited in the brown bin.
