Eduardo Castillo, the City Councilor for Citizen Protection, has announced that the Santander City Council is on alert for municipal services in response to adverse weather forecasts. This comes as the Government of Cantabria has activated the Special Civil Protection Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (Meteocant) at the pre-emergency phase.
The activation follows orange and yellow weather warnings for heavy rainfall and yellow warnings for storms, which are in effect from 3:00 PM today until 8:00 AM tomorrow. Forecasts indicate the possibility of very heavy downpours, potentially exceeding 30 liters per square meter.
"We are monitoring the situation closely and ask residents to exercise caution and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection," Castillo stated.
Recommendations from Civil Protection
In light of the current situation, the General Directorate of Civil Protection of Cantabria advises against outdoor activities and, where possible, travel by road. Residents are also urged to take extra precautions near watercourses.
To prepare for potential heavy rainfall, it is recommended to:
- Check drainage systems and remove leaves, dirt, or any debris that may obstruct water flow.
- Stay away from riverbanks, streams, and bridges.
- Avoid parking vehicles near rivers, streams, or torrents.
- Refrain from crossing waterlogged areas with vehicles.
- Keep pets and sensitive items secured indoors.
- Regularly check weather forecasts and heed authorities' instructions.
Civil Protection also reminds the public that they should only contact emergency services at 112 in case of an emergency.
