OSPA opens 2026-2027 season with Falla, Ravel, and Asturian talent

The Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias (OSPA) is set to open its 2026-2027 season with two prominent figures from 20th-century music, Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel, alongside notable Asturian talent. Gijón-born pianist Martín García and the vocal ensemble El León de Oro will join the orchestra for the inaugural concerts, conducted by Nuno Coelho.

The program will feature Falla's 'Noches en los jardines de España,' a celebrated piece where the piano plays a central role alongside the orchestra, with García returning to Asturias after a successful international career. He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and toured Japan with a series of 14 concerts that attracted 25,000 spectators. In 2021, he won first prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition and placed third at the International Chopin Piano Competition.

The second part of the concert will focus on Ravel's 'Daphnis et Chloé,' a work that requires a wide array of orchestral resources and will feature the participation of El León de Oro. This Asturian ensemble has performed at international festivals in Arezzo, Flanders, Tolosa, Varna, and Tours, and has received accolades including the Gran Premio Nacional de Canto Coral in 2003 and 2006.

The combination of Falla and Ravel with García and El León de Oro brings together two essential works of the symphonic repertoire and highlights the significant presence of Asturian artists on both national and international stages, connecting the new season of OSPA with the musical talent of the Principality.

The concerts will take place at 19:30 on Thursday, October 8, at the Teatro Jovellanos in Gijón/Xixón, and on Friday, October 9, at the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo/Uviéu. Individual tickets are priced between 18 and 25 euros, with reduced rates for seniors over 65 and those under 30. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of the auditorium in Oviedo/Uviéu from 09:30 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00, and at the Gijón theater from 12:00 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 20:30, as well as through the website www.ospa.es.
