Madrid's Deputy Mayor Meets with President of Victims of Terrorism Association

On October 2, 2026, Inma Sanz, the Deputy Mayor of Madrid, met with Lucía Ruiz, the president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT), at the Palacio de Cibeles. This meeting marked the first bilateral discussion since Ruiz took office in May.

The two leaders focused on the primary needs of the victims' community in the capital and the ongoing collaboration between the city council and the AVT. They discussed the support provided by the association to victims and their families, including psychological assistance, as well as social, legal, and employment guidance.

Additionally, Sanz and Ruiz addressed municipal initiatives aimed at preserving the memory of terrorism victims. These initiatives include the 'Itinerario de la libertad' (Itinerary of Freedom), commemorative monuments, and street naming conventions. The meeting also facilitated discussions on coordinating future commemorative events in Madrid and exploring potential educational initiatives aimed at young people in local schools.

Lucía Ruiz became president of the AVT in May 2026. She is a survivor of the December 11, 1987, bombing by ETA at the Casa Cuartel in Zaragoza, which resulted in 11 fatalities, including five children. Her personal experience underscores the ongoing challenges faced by victims of terrorism in Spain.
