On October 6, 2026, Madrid's mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, participated in the announcement of the Open de España presented by Madrid, a prestigious golf tournament set to occur from October 8 to 11 at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. This event will bring together 120 golfers from around the world, including renowned players such as Jon Rahm, Sergio García, and the current champion, Marco Penge.
The tournament, which consists of 72 holes, offers the winner a spot in both the Masters Tournament in Augusta and the 2027 Open Championship in Britain. With a history spanning over a century, it ranks as the third oldest tournament in Europe.
During the presentation, Almeida emphasized the significance of the event, describing it as “a major sporting occasion” with a unique character within the city's calendar, which attracts elite players to Madrid. He also highlighted that the capital is recognized as one of the world's top five cities for sports, alongside New York, Los Angeles, London, and Paris, a status earned through its commitment to excellence in hosting events.
According to data from the Madrid Golf Federation, Madrid has established itself as the leading golf capital in Spain, surpassing 100,000 golf licenses last summer, reflecting an annual growth rate of nearly 4%. Among these, over 27,000 are women, representing one-third of the country's female golfers. The total number of registered players has quadrupled since 1996, showcasing a deep-rooted passion for the sport that began with the founding of the Madrid Polo Golf Club in 1895. The Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, established in 1942 and boasting 34,000 members, stands as one of the sport's key venues in the region.
