Cultural campaign launched to promote Extremadura through local football rivalries

On October 2, 2026, Laureano León, the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports of Extremadura, unveiled the "Derbis Extremeños de Primera Federación" campaign aimed at promoting the region through the broadcasts of matches featuring four local football clubs: C.D. Extremadura, C.D. Coria, C.D. Cacereño, and A.D. Mérida. This season, these teams are competing in the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF).

The presentation took place in Mérida and was attended by representatives from the four clubs, as well as José Alberto Cacho, the director of the Foundation for Youth and Sports, among other officials. León emphasized that this is the first time Extremadura has four teams in this national category simultaneously, calling it a historic achievement and a source of pride for the region.

The campaign aims to leverage the internal support among fans from the four towns and promote Extremadura externally across various locations in Spain. León stated that the initiative revolves around three key concepts: support, passion, and respect. The campaign will include the creation of a specific logo that the teams will wear on their jerseys, increased advertising in stadiums, and pre-match presentations.

The first match is scheduled for this Sunday, featuring A.D. Mérida against C.D. Cacereño at 18:45 at the Estadio Romano José Fouto in Mérida. During the presentation, León also acknowledged the contributions of Santiago Amaro, the outgoing director general of Sports, who was instrumental in developing this initiative.

José Alberto Cacho explained that the campaign ensures over eighteen hours of broadcasts, including pre-match and post-match coverage, which will help showcase the community and region through football. He estimated that the campaign could achieve up to 4 million views across audiovisual platforms.

The initiative is valued at €160,000, with projected returns of €432,000, representing a 2.7% increase compared to previous investments made by the Foundation. Cacho noted that the Foundation for Youth and Sports will contribute €70,000 in sponsorship, with an additional €40,000 for each club, totaling €110,000 per entity.

In a statement on behalf of the four clubs, Carlos Ordóñez, president of C.D. Cacereño, expressed that this support is crucial for their growth, highlighting the positive connection among the clubs despite their on-field rivalry.
