Completion of the 'Trail del Cuera' Enhancement and Signage

On October 2, 2026, the Llanes Town Hall announced the completion of the enhancement and signage of the 'Trail del Cuera', a project that required an investment of €29,257.80. The initiative was part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination (PSTD) and aimed to improve the safety and accessibility of the trail for hikers.

The project involved clearing over 3,000 meters of the trail and installing signage approved by the Spanish Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports (FEDME). This enhancement not only improves user safety but also prevents hikers from wandering onto private properties, solidifying the trail's status as a key resource for hiking and active tourism in the region.

Details of the Enhancement

The enhancement of the 'Short Section of the Trail del Cuera' has resulted in a fully accessible and well-marked path. The works were part of the broader initiative 'Llanes en el Camino', which is included in the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds.

Key Improvements

  • Trail Clearing: Manual clearing was conducted using brush cutters over 15 sections, totaling 3,093.58 meters. A minimum width of 3 meters was cleared to ensure optimal pedestrian safety.
  • Signage Installation: A complete and uniform signage system was installed, adhering to FEDME standards. This included:
    • Painting directional marks on rocks and walls using approved colors (white and yellow for short routes).
    • Vertical signage: Installation of posts with directional arrows, informative plaques, and start and end route signs.
    • Interpretative elements: A panoramic table and informational signs were placed at points of interest such as Fuente La Valleya and Mallada de Los Cuetos.

The completion of this project significantly boosts active tourism and hiking in Llanes, highlighting the area's natural and ethnographic heritage. The approved signage allows visitors to navigate the trail confidently, promoting responsible and sustainable tourism while establishing the 'Trail del Cuera' as a premier sporting and tourist resource.

The Llanes Town Hall reaffirms its commitment to conserving and improving its natural spaces, as well as promoting sustainable rural development through sports and nature tourism. The trail is now fully operational and available for all users.

This initiative is part of various projects outlined in the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination 'Llanes en el Camino', which the Llanes Town Hall has executed with funding from the Territorial Plan for Tourism Sustainability in Destination of the Principality of Asturias, through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, and supported by European Next Generation EU funds. The total budget for the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Llanes reaches €2.2 million, with 10% funded by municipal resources and the remainder through European financing obtained via the PRTR.
